Biographical Note

Daniel DeMotte was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, on March 19, 1798 and was left an orphan at the age of thirteen. He married at the age of 19 and became a farmer, and of course the customs of the country became law to him. When he was 28 he was converted and joined the Church, and went forth to do the whole duty of an earnest Christian. In 1831 he moved to Parke County, Indiana, and soon thereafter received license to preach. He was admitted into the Indiana Conference in the fall of 1835 and for eighteen years faithfully and usefully filled the appointments assigned him by the Indiana Conference, doing all the work of a Methodist preacher to his utmost ability. At the solicitation of the Board of Trustees of Indiana Asbury University, he became an agent for the University.
