Historical Sketch
Atkinson Chapel was organized about 1858. The first church building was a log structure and located across the road, west of the present building. On September 19, 1879, a deed was received for one-half acre of land at the present location and the present structure was erected and dedicated as Atkinson Chapel Church in June, 1881. The building was remodeled in 1921. In 1955 the interior was completely renewed, the ceiling was lowered, the wall paneled, new windows and woodwork installed, floor refinished, carpet laid and exterior painted. In 1962 the original hand-hewn sills had to be replaced and the foundation repaired. The actual cost was $538.48. In all repair projects much labor and material was donated. The membership in 1968 was 25. The church closed July 1, 2007.
