Biographical Sketch

John "Jack" Milton Hull, Jr. was born March 10, 1922. He was born into a family steeped in the stoneware and pottery industry of Perry County, Ohio. He was a member of the DePauw University Class of 1943 and a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He wrote regularly to his family during his freshman and sophomore years of college 1939-1941. He vividly and enthusiastically described the ups and downs of college life, and captured the optimistic spirit of a generation emerging from the Great Depression. But as Jack and his fraternity brothers studied, played baseball and other sports, dated, attended movies, proms and serenades, and toured Chicago and Indianapolis, their bright future clouded: the conflict in Europe threatened to engulf America. Indeed World War II shaped the lives of most members of the Class of 1943 immeasurably. The Class includes Jack's roommate, Jim Quayle, a Marine who became a newspaper owner and publisher, and the father of a U.S. Vice-President. Jack died after a protracted illness, at the age of 19 in 1941 after two years at DePauw.
