Biographical Sketch

James (DPU 1931) and Lucie Moorman Hupp (DPU 1933) met at DePauw University as undergraduate students. James and Lucie were engaged at DePauw on March 15, 1930, and after James had finished his graduate work at the University of Chicago, they were married October 27, 1934 and moved to California. They had 3 children: James David Hupp, Lucy Ann Williams and Laura Schell. James Hupp retired in January 1973 as Manager of a CPA firm in San Francisco, California and Lucie retired as a organic garden writer and teacher. Both James and Lucie Hupp were very active in areas of social action , i.e. World Peace, Environmental Problems and Conservation of our Natural Resources, Equal Opportunities, etc. throughout their lives. The Hupps were active members of the Orinda Community Church. They also joined the Quaker Meeting in Berkeley and the Unitarian Church in Walnut Creek in a search for social justice. They helped to found the Mt. Diablo Peace Center and the Council for Civic Unity to promote racial harmony. People called them the oldest hippies in Orinda, California.
