Historical Sketch

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) at DePauw University is located in the Union Building, suite 100A. OMA serves the entire DePauw campus by providing programs and services on issues of multiculturalism, diversity, and social justice, and by acting as an advocate for members of diverse communities. Within the context of OMA at DePauw University, "culture" has been broadly and intentionally defined to include racial and ethnic heritage, as well as religious affiliation, gender (identity & expression), sexual orientation, economic class, physical ability and first generation experience. They recognize that "multicultural" indicates the interplay between the composite elements of individuals, communities and the cultures they create. They acknowledge that this is, at best, a working definition. The Office of Multicultural Affairs provides students with a sense of cultural identity and belonging through: 1) Programming - Guest speakers; "The Hump" programming series, Wednesdays, noon in UB Memorial Lounge (Fishbowl). 2) Services - Affinity/ Identity Group Advising, Sensitivity Training & Workshops; Making Waves Series. 3) Campus Education & Advocacy - Diversity Training & Support for students in need; Facilitated Discussion Groups.
