Biographical Sketch

Clifton Jackson Phillips began his interest in Asia while he was stationed in Japan with the Occupation Forces following World War II and after his discharge when he stayed on in a civilian education job with the Department of Defense. Phillips entered Hiram College in 1938 working as a preacher at a nearby church to pay his way. After graduation in 1941 and before entering the service, Phillips received a BTh degree from the Starr King School of Theology in 1944. He returned to the United States in 1949 and entered Harvard University where he received an MA in 1950 and a PhD in 1954.

Phillips then began his career at DePauw University in 1954 as instructor in history under department head, George Manhart. He retired to Senior Professor status in 1984. While a full-time professor, Phillips held the Alfred and Kathleen Evens Professor of American History chair. He returned to Asia twice during his career, once to Korea on a Fullbright Scholarship and next to Taiwan.
