Collection Statement

Collection consists mainly of correspondence and reports from the office files of Deans of Men and Deans of Women and their Assistants. The collection is divided into two series, the first is the Dean of Women, 1904 - 1948 and the second is the Dean of Men, 1926 - 1948.

Historical Sketch

Dean of Women, 1904 - 1948 The position of Dean of Women was created in 1904 and for many years was regarding as a responsibility in addition to teaching duties. Dean Elizabeth Smith was the first dean to be listed in the catalog whose only responsibilities were the duties of the deans office. The position increased in duties and responsibility with the coming of Dean Alvord. In 1948 the Offices of the Dean of Women and Men were merged to create the Office of the Dean of Students.
