Historical Sketch

St. Paul United Methodist Church was founded December 18, 1887, by Dr. J. H. Bayless, with a membership of seven. The first pastor was M. C. Cooper. St. Paul's began its active life in a little schoolhouse on the eastern edge of the city, located on Wayne Trace. These quarters were soon outgrown and a modest frame church was erected on Walton Ave. (now Anthony Blvd.), which was enlarged in 1911 to a very commodious steam-heated building with a seating capacity of 550. This building soon became inadequate and the final house of worship was erected on the corner of Lumbard and Pittsburgh Street. This church at 1406 Lumbard St. held its last service on Easter Sunday, April 2000 after 113 years of existence.
