Biographical Sketch

The author of many works of scholarship and creative writing, Nist had been a professor of English and speech at Eastern Michigan University, a visiting professor of English at the Univ. of Arizona, chairman of the English department at Austin College, and most recently a professor of English and linguistics and an author at Auburn University. In 1964 he was awarded the Machado de Assis medal, Brazilian Academy of Letters, from the Brazilian government for his translations of Brazilian poetry and contribution to better understanding between North and South America. A Rector Scholar at DePauw, he graduated with distinction and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, three Fulbright-Hays Grants, and a Fulbright Lectureship Grant for the 1970-71 academic year in Rome, Italy. Nist died June 18, 1981 in Naples, Italy.
