Collection Statement

The collection consists of diaries, illustrations, poems, letters, journals, and articles by and about Elijah Evan Edwards. It includes data about his life as a student at Indiana Asbury University, his military service as a Chaplain in the Civil War, his term as the first president of Colorado State Agricultural College, now Colorado State University, and other information by or about Elijah Edwards from 1846-1910. Illustrations consist mainly of pen and ink sketches of student life at Indiana Asbury University and army life during the Civil War. Portions of the diaries are copies of originals held by Colorado State University and the Minnesota Historical Society. The Civil War Diaries were written by E.E. Edwards many years after the war and were based on letters to his wife, letters for publication in local papers, and sketches from his pocket diary. Biographical Sketch

Elijah Edwards was born January 26, 1831 in Delaware, OH. He received his A.B. in 1853 from Indiana Asbury University and in 1854 married Mrs. Alice Eddy. He received his A.M. in 1856 from McKendree College, Lebanon, Illinois; and from 1856-1858 he was president of Whitewater College, Centerville, Indiana. From 1861-1864 he was pastor at Hudson, Wisconsin; and during the latter part of the Civil War, he was Chaplain of the 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. In 1877 he received an Honorary Ph.D from Indiana Asbury University. From 1879-1882 he was the first president of the Colorado State Agricultural College, now Colorado State University; and from 1886-1888 he was president of the St. Croix Dalles Institute. In addition, Elijah Edwards held many other positions, a large number of which were religious. His wife, Alice, died in 1896. Three years later, he married Mrs. Ellen Tingley. Edwards died November 10, 1915.

Kathleen Fine's Winter Term Project on Outline of Life of Elijah E. Edwards is located in DC 829, folder 3. The folder contains the outline and correspondence relating to the project.

McKendree Repository, a student newspaper existing from 1871-1873, is located at McKendree College, Holman Library, Lebanon, Ill. 62254. It contains poems by Edwards, notes about his Chapel lectures, and references to talks he gave after a trip to Colorado.

Pioneer College President by James R. Miller is located in the DePauw Archives with the call no. LD1150 .M54 1962.

After Noontide by Benjamin S. Parker (c1905) contains illustrations by Edwards. It is located in the DePauw Archives with the call no. PS2520.P4 A3 1905.
