Biographical Sketch

Judith A. George organized the first varsity-level field hockey team at DePauw and coached the sport for more than 30 years. A 1962 Miami (Ohio) University graduate, George joined the DePauw faculty in 1965 and later coached field hockey on a club basis. Since the sport became varsity level, George’s teams amassed more than 250 wins. In 1989 she earned the Coaches Award from the Women’s Sports Foundation and was the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1990 after leading the Tigers to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. George received the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award for Indiana in 1998. Additionally, she is the recipient of numerous conference and district coach of the year honors. George also has coached volleyball, golf, bowling, archery and fencing. She announced her retirement from coaching field hockey in April 2000.She continued to serve as professor of health and physical performance at DePauw. George, who earned a M.S. degree in 1965 from Indiana University, as well as a P.E.Dir. degree in 1974, has been an advocate for women’s sports issues and has had opinion editorials and studies published in newspapers and journals across the country. She also served as health and physical performance department chair until last June. Her husband, James E.George, was a chemistry professor at DePauw. In April 2005, the James E. George Fountain in the Percy Lavon Julian Science & Mathematics Center was dedicated in his memory.
