Scope and Contents

The collection includes Tingley family correspondence, two scrapbooks compiled by Ellen Tingley, papers written by Joseph Tingley while a professor at Indiana Asbury, an 8x10 color photograph of a painting by Theodore C. Steele of the children of Professor Tingley, deed to the Ellenwood home, a few photographs and ephemera.

Biographical Note

Joseph Tingley (1822-1892) graduated from Indiana Asbury University in 1846, married Ellen Rebecca Webb in 1853, and taught natural sciences at Indiana Asbury for 30 years from 1849-1879. After Joseph's death, Ellen married another famous Asbury graduate, Elijah Evans Edwards (1831-1915) on June 8, 1899 in Greencastle, Indiana. They separated sometime around 1910, but there is no record of a divorce. Joseph Tingley and Ellen Tingley Edwards are buried side by side in Greencastle's Forest Hill Cemetery, which he platted.
