Historical Note
Erected as a memorial to Edward L. Scarritt (class of 1882) the owl fountain originally had water flowing from the mouth of the fish. Inscribed on the monument, which stands in the center of campus near East College, are the words, "Until the day break and shadows flee away."
Mr. Edward Scarritt died at the age of 31, just after he had organized and become president of the Washington State Bank of Tacoma. He was a native of Dorchester, Illinois, and recieved his master's degree from DePauw in 1887. After receiving a law degree he moved to Tacoma to practice.
