Scope and Contents

The collection includes sermons and notes Rev. Boase wrote throughout his ministry. Boase was very conscious of not wasting paper so he often wrote material for his sermons on the back of envelopes or on the back side of paper already used. The collection also includes miscellaneous pamphlets, booklets and newspaper clippings related to the ministry and his sermons. The folders containing the sermons are listed alphabetically in the first three document cases with the miscellaneous material following in the last two.

Biographical Note

Herbert Boase was born in Penzance, England. In 1890 Boase, his sister, and his father came to the United States. He lived and worked a few years in the hard coal mines of North Eastern Pennsylvania. A good Presbyterian Layman in the mines was a good influence on him for the ministry. Boase left the mines to pursue education and ministry. He entered Taylor University Academy where he met and married Mary H. McLaughlin. He fathered three sons, George, Edward and Paul. He entered the North Indiana Conference on trial in 1905 and was taken into full membership in 1909. He served many churches in the conference. These include, Ashley, Galveston, Wakarusa, Topeka, Leesburg, Alexandria, Market Street, Logansport, Columbia City, North Manchester, Knightstown and Winchester. He retired in 1954. He died on August 31, 1958 while teaching a Sunday School Class at Winchester. He was noted for his preaching and remarkable sense of humor.
