Biographical Sketch

Elisha Cowgill, son of John and Mary Cowgill, was born in Putnam County on November 2, 1835. He married Nellie S. Cowgill and they had one daughter, Jessie Glenn Cowgill, who graduated from DePauw in 1889 and later married William Happ of Greencastle. Elisha fought under General Lew Wallace during the Civil War, where he was wounded at the battle of Shiloh. A member of the Putnam County bar, he served as county commissioner and city clerk and was later elected mayor of Greencastle. However, he made his living primarily as an artist and painter, and several of his paintings hang in the Putnam County Courthouse. Nellie S. Cowgill died on October 6, 1911. Elisha Cowgill died on February 1, 1914. Both are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, south of Greencastle.
