Biographical Note

Francis M. Vreeland was the Assistant Professor of Sociology at DePauw University from 1929-1933, Associate Professor of Sociology from 1933-1936, and Professor of Sociology from 1936-1943. His background in anthropology and archaeology enabled him to offer a course in Social Anthropology, the first in the field at DePauw. Other new courses added included Criminology, the Family, and the Sociology of Poverty and Dependence. He was responsible for the establishment of the DePauw Social Museum located within the basement of East College.
