Biographical Sketch

Class of 1917. Hawthorne Darby went on to Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from there as a doctor in 1923. Because of her deep faith and strong ties to the Methodist Church, her life's dream had always been to become a missionary. After interning in Chicago, she left for Manila, in the Phillippine Islands. She worked at the Mary Johnson Hospital, caring for patients there until she and two other missionaries were killy by Japanese forces in late 1944, at the end of World War II.
