Biographical Sketch

Glenn Edwin Welliver, professor emeritus of German at DePauw University, was a member of the faculty for 38 years. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 20, 1933. Welliver graduated with high honors from Dickinson College in 1955. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in German from Northwestern University after serving for two years in the U.S. Army. Welliver joined the DePauw faculty as an instructor of German. He was named an assistant professor in 1964, and was promoted to associate professor in 1968 and professor in 1976. Dr. Welliver chaired his department from 1983 until his retirement in 1999. His teaching focused on German culture and literature in addition to innovative language instruction. Welliver's sabbaticals took him to German-speaking areas, and he visited the former East Germany shortly after the reunification of the country.

In 1958 Glenn Welliver married a college classmate, Edith Harriot Bean. She also taught German at DePauw University, part-time Assistant in German and Russian 1983-1987; Assistant Professor of German 1987-1990; Part-time Assistant Professor in German 1990-1997; Adjunct Professor of German 1997-1999. They have one son, Ralph Martin Welliver, who with his wife Jennifer and two grandchildren, lives in Berryville, Virginia.
