June Maxine Mull papers

June Mull was born June 6, 1904 in Hartford City, Indiana, and died December 6, 1969 in Muncie, Indiana. She is buried in Hartford City. After graduation from DePauw University in 1927 June became a member of the editorial staff of the Muncie Morning Star from 1928 to 1943. Her work included the writing of features, news stories, book reviews, and music and drama criticism. She also wrote a weekly column entitled "Shop Talk." She jointed Applegate Advertising in Muncie in June 1943 as a copy writer and director of publicity.

June was a member of the American Association of University Women, Muncie Altrusa Club, and Kappa Kappa Kappa Sorority. In addition, she served on the board of Muncie Civic Theatre and as a director of the Women's Civil Council of Muncie. During World War II she was a second lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol and was Intelligence and Public Relations Officer of Squadron 525-1. June lost her parents at an early age and was raised by Olive B. Frash Cook, her aunt, and her uncle Lincoln Cook (who died in 1928). Olive lived until 1960 so she and June had many years together. June had at least one sister, Mildred (born 1902) but was not especially close to her. When June died, she left her sister a small bequest but left the interest of the remainder of her estate to her college friend Sally Robards Roberts '30, and then to Sally's daughters, Sarah Roberts Kranbuehl Houghland '65 and Katherine "Kitty" Roberts Keenan '72. The corpus of the estate will go to DePauw University after their deaths.

Because June Mull '27 never married and wasn't close to many family members except her "Aunt Ollie," the family of her college friend Sally Robards Roberts '30 were among her closest "family." She also had many other friends, especially among the single professional women living in Muncie. She was with the Roberts family for holidays and family gatherings and traveled with them on a trip to Canada in 1949 and a trip to England for 8 weeks in 1962. They sailed on the USS United States, visited many manificent sites, and re-united with Mr. Robert's World War II friends.

June inherited a house in Hartford City, Indiana along with a 120 acre farm from her Aunt Ollie. In 1971, a couple years after June Mull '27 passed away, her friend Sally Robards Roberts '30 was settling June's estate and this farm went on the market. Mr. Roberts encouraged his two son-in-laws, David Kranbuehl '65 and James Culver Keenan '72, to buy the farm. David and Jim purchased the Mull farm for $41,400, or an average price of $345/acre in February 1971.
