Collection Statement

Sermons, diaries and subject files including correspondence, biographical information, photographs and files relating to the International Order of Good Templars. A run of the Hoosier Methodist newspaper, for which Rev. Backus served as editor, was separated from the collection. Sermons in the collection are a sample selected from the original accession. The collection is divided into five series: subject files, sermons, diaries, photographs and oversize items.

Biographical Sketch

Alfred H. Backus was born February 14, 1876, son of a minister, James E. R. Backus. He received his bachelor's degree from Taylor University, class of 1902. Following receipt of a bachelor of divinity degree from Drew Theological Seminary in 1903, he served churches throughout the North Indiana Conference of the Methodist Church. He was a member of the DePauw University Board of Trustees from 1940-1942. He was active in the International Order of Good Templars (IOGT), the temperance movement, Christian education and the Boy Scouts of America. Alfred Backus married Nellie Elizabeth Mason Backus in 1913. He retired from the ministry in 1944 and died at Wesley Manor, Frankfort, Indiana November 25, 1977.

Items in the collection had been placed in sleeves before the collection was received by DePauw University. Diary 21, 1919: Mold on this item was treated with Thymol on May 1-2, 2018. MC 1201, folder 15: Photographs were removed from the album before the collection was received by DePauw University Archives.
