Mary Frances Grose Witman papers

DePauw University, class of 1921. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, June 6, 1898, Mary Frances Grose Witman was the oldest of five children of DePauw president George Grose and his wife, Lucy Gose. Following graduation from high school, she went on to study at both Mount Holyoke College and DePauw University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the latter, with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. From there she studied in the department of Christian Education at Boston University School of Theology toward a master's degree. It was there that she met Edwin Witman. They were married in Greencastle, Indiana, in 1922. They became the proud parents of four sons, Edwin, Harold, Henry and Frank. After thirty-one years with her husband in the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, she came with him to the Southern California-Arizona Conference serving at First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica, California. Frances Grose died on April 25, 1991.
