Historical Sketch
In May 1889, representatives from five Methodist young people's societies met in Cleveland, Ohio to form a new conglomerate organization--The Epworth League. Epworth was the home of John Wesley, founder of Methodism, and the name "League" was taken from his words, "I desire a league of offensive and defensive with every soldier of Jesus Christ." After six years, the membership was 1,250,000 and district and state conventions followed. Indianapolis soon played host to an international convention of almost 10,000 people.
After fifty years, the Epworth League was superseded by the Methodist Youth Fellowship when the three Methodist bodies united. Institutes and camp meetings were an essential part of summer assembly.
