Biographical Note

John Evans was born near Waynesville, Ohio on March 9, 1814. He graduated with a degree in medicine from Cincinnati College in 1838. In 1839 he married Hannah Canby and they moved to Attica, Indiana, where he began his medical practice.

He was: the founder of Northwestern Christian Advocate; the editor of the Northwestern Medical and Surgical Journal; the founder of the Indiana Deaf School; founder of Mercy Hospital; director of Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad; founder of Northwestern University; second territorial governor of Colorado; U.S. Senator from Colorado; and founder of the University of Denver. Evanston, IL and Mount Evans in Colorado were named after him, and he was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, delivering to Lincoln all of Indiana's delegates in the 1860 Republican Convention.

He died in Denver, Colorado on July 3,1897. Hannah Canby died in Chicago, Illinois, October 9, 1850 and is buried with three of her sons, in Attica, IN.
