Biographical / Historical
Class of x1918. Mary Ethel Smoker Elliott was the daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Smoker. She was born on the Elkhart Prarie, near Goshen, Indiana, October 21, 1894. She graduated from the Middlebury High school, class of 1913. For one year after her graduation she remained at home, but the following year shed entered DePauw University to pursue a course in Music and Public School Art. During the term of 1915-1916 she taught these subjects in the Middlebury public schools. She loved all good music and was an accomplished pianist and soloist. On June 21, 1916, she was united in marriage with Daniel Elliott. At the time of their marriage Mr. Elliott was employed in Chicago and there they lived for a short time. Later they moved to Wolcottville. She united with the Lutheran church at Griner when about twelve years of age and later transferred her membership to the Lutheran church at this place. When she moved to Wolcottville and found no church of her own denomination, she transferred her membership to the Methodist church. She passed away during childbirth on May 24, 1917.
