Biographical / Historical
By Thomas Emery: "I started The Prickly Barb in the later 70s to give feedback to The DePauw staff, to let them know that as adviser I was watching and caring. I usually did it once a week on Sunday afternoons after I had finished reading my class papers. I did it quickly, usually on my old 1898/1927 Underwood on copy paper with lots of cross-outs and strikeovers and I never intended it to be something saved or a record. I can't remember when or why I stopped doing it, probably when I took a sabbatical. When we closed the Publications Building to go to what was then the Center for Contemporary Media, I took the batch that remained then and I found some others filed afterwards. As you can see, they are usually not dated fully and former staffers will have to go by the names mentioned for praise or obloquy. The Barb was patterned after a column that used to come out of The New York Times newsroom called "Winners and Sinners" and was named partly after The Berkeley Barb, a Bay Area antiwar newspaper of the 60s."
