Biographical Note

Mary Ellen Bills (Smith) was born on July 28, 1904, in Rush, Indiana, as Grace W. Whitezel and Frederick A. Bill's youngest child. Ms. Bills attended Lewisville High School and later pursued higher education at DePauw University, where she graduated in 1927 with a degree from the School of Music. During her time at DePauw, she showcased her love for music by participating in various singing groups, including “The Messiah,” which organized memorable Easter and Christmas services. She was also involved in the Young Women’s Christian Association.

It was at DePauw that Mary met Lloyd Smith. They later got married on January 17, 1931. Together, they had one son, Richard Bills Smith.

Mrs. Smith was dedicated to her career as a music educator, teaching at Centerville High School, where she also directed the school’s orchestra and chorus. She continued her teaching career in Carmel, Indiana, schools, inspiring countless students with her passion for music. In 1939, Mary and Lloyd purchased a funeral home, founding the Smith Funeral Home. The business became a family endeavor, with all three members working together to serve their community.

Mary passed away on June 24, 2007, leaving behind a legacy of music, service, and love. Mary Ellen was laid to rest in Carmel, Indiana.
