Historical note

At the first quarterly conference held in Roberts Chapel (Indianapolis, Ind.), it was resolved "That no musical instruments or choir be permitted in the church so long as a kind providence shall let Roberts Chapel stand." This began a long struggle within the congregation which resulted in the founding of Grace Methodist Episcopal Mission Church (Indianapolis, Marion County, Ind.). When Roberts Chapel was sold in 1868 and the plans were made for Roberts Park Church, the majority of the members were determined upon an organ. The dissenting members, realizing the battle was lost, separated from Roberts Park and established Grace Church on September 22, 1869. They met on the corner of East and Market streets.
