Historical Note
Jack the Dog, a stray that appeared on campus in 1892, lived on handouts, joined student groups, attended classes, football games, and morning chapel. He was once “dognapped” by men from a neighboring institution, but was recovered by disguised DePauw students. After allegedly being poisoned in 1896, Jack was given a funeral in Meharry Hall. The University band played while he was buried on the East College south lawn.
He did not belong to any one student or group, but joined in all campus activities until his untimely death.
