Daniel Hovey Hanna papers

Daniel Hovey Hanna was born in Greencastle, Indiana January 27, 1923. Hanna is the son of Samuel T. Hanna who designed and built the first DPU bookstore and of Lillian (Daniel) Hanna. Hanna graduated from Greencastle High School in 1940. During World War II he was a member of the 624th Air Force Band. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from DePauw in 1947 and 1948. On April 5, 1947, he married Virginia Walbring. For the next four years, after graduating, Hanna was in Andalusia, Alabama teaching public high school. In 1952, Hanna came back to Greencastle and started his teaching career at DePauw as the assistant of director of bands, assistant to the Admissions Office, and assistant professor of music education. He became the full director of bands in 1955. Hanna's last concert was March 10, 1987, retiring after 35 years of teaching music at DePauw. After retiring, Hanna continued to live in Greencastle while also visiting Florida often. Hanna was a member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church. Daniel H. Hanna died on November 6, 2007 and was survived by his wife, Virginia Hanna; his son, Stephen Hanna; his daughter, Sandra Liston; his sister, Lila Manhart; and his grandchildren, Megan Hanna and Sean Liston.
