Biographical Sketch

Willard J. Gambold was a member of the DePauw University class of 1931. He was recipient of a DePauw Alumni Citation in 1959 and was a candidate for election to the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors at the time of his death in 1966. Willard began his distinguished career in education as a teacher at Amo (Ind.) High School in 1931, moved to Shortridge High School in Indianapolis four years later, and taught there until 1948 when he became head of the social studies department at Broad Ripple High School. He joined the city school administrative staff in 1953 and was named assistant superintendent in 1959. Mr. Gambold, who held the master’s degree from Indiana University and had also studied at Harvard, was awarded a Ford Foundation grant in 1952 to study economic education programs in schools and industries in the U.S. He was one of 12 educators in the country to receive the American educator’s medal from the Freedoms Foundation in 1961. Active in civic affairs, he had served as board chairman and member of the executive committee of North Methodist Church and as charge lay leader, the highest post for a layman in the church. He was a Rector Scholar, a member of Phi Gamma Delta at DePauw, and a member of Phi Delta Kappa education honorary. He died March 30, 1966, at the age of 56.
