Biographical Note

Born March 13, 1849, in Valparaiso, Indiana, a son of Samuel A. and Harriet Cornell Campbell, natives of New York and Ohio respectively, Mr. Campbell received his early education in the rural schools near his home, later attending the college in Valparaiso. When 20 years old, Marvin Campbell became an instructor of mathematics in the Valparaiso High School. He left a year later to assume a similar position in the South Bend High School. After two years in the High School, he turned his interest to the mercantile field, entering the hardware business in which he continued with marked success for the next twelve years. His success as a captain of industry caused the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company to seek his services and in 1889 he became purchasing agent for that concern, later winning advancement to the position of manager of the sales department.

He continued until January 1, 1899, when he resigned to devote his entire time to the Campbell Paper Box company, which had its beginning six years earlier when it was incorporated by him and his twin brother, the late Myron Campbell, who died September 11, 1916. Throughout his life, Mr. Campbell gave unstintingly of his time to works of charity and public good. He took a prominent part in Epworth Hospital as president of the board of trustees. Mr. Campbell married Lydia A. Brownfield in 1874, daughter of the late John Brownfield, one of the earliest merchants in South Bend and prominent citizen. At the age of 80, Marvin Campbell died of heart trouble following a two month illness on January 1, 1930.
