Historical Sketch

In 1908 the Andrew Carnegie Library was built with a grant from the industrialist of $50,000, plus a subscription from donors of $57,000 for maintenance. On the ground floor was a large reading room, stacks with seminars and departmental libraries on the second floor. After nearly fifty years as the DePauw main library, it was converted into what is now the Emison Art Center. Carnegie Reading room in 1908 featured closed stacks behind glass partitions. To the left of the main desk were current periodicals. The grandfather clock is still in the main library, but has not run for many decades. In later years, male students studied on the left side of the reading room and the coeds on the right. Today the room is the main gallery of the Emison Art Center.
