Historical Sketch
The Collegians, organized as an all-men's glee club in 1949 by Donald Pfost '51 and Ronald Williams '49, made their official debut on campus as intermission entertainment for a 1949 spring dance in Bowman Gymnasium. Soon after, women were added and the group began performing around the Midwest. Each Collegians concert was built around songs from popular Broadway musicals and and well-known, upbeat and energetic standards and comedy numbers. Many concerts also featured the "Lost Chords" quartet who were members of the group.
Throughout the years the DePauw Collegians entertained visiting diplomats, appeared on television shows and made tours to Armed Service bases. In the spring of 1962, under the auspices of the USO, the Collegians flew over a 15,000 mile route to visit military installations in the Far East. From as far north as Wakkanai, on the Japanese island of Hokaido, to Angeles, on the Filipino island of Luzon, the group of five women and nine men gave 55 concerts to an estimated 45,000 people. The Collegians had a significant role in spreading DePauw's fame across the country - and even overseas.
Although under the guidance of DePauw University, the Collegians
throughout its' existence as a "student only" group managed and directed entirely by its members. Many of the songs in their repertoire were arranged by student members.
Spring 1999 marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Collegians.
