Historical Sketch

The first United Brethren society founded in this part of the County was known as "Knob's Church," organized in 1822. The group worshiped in a log building, and the class prospered until 1845, when some of the leading members sold out and moved farther west. In 1847 the class was reorganized as Atkins Chapel, and used the old log church until 1878 when they erected a small frame building. This continued as their place of worship until the present building was erected in 1911. An educational unit was added in 1958 at a cost of $3,200 for material, almost all labor and some material being donated. The first Sunday School was organized in 1866. The church did well, considering the fact that the community has been predominantly Catholic. It was made a station in 1927, but was edded to New Albany Circuit in 1929. The church was again made a station in 1962. The membership in 1968 was 43.
