This collection includes a handwritten Indiana Asbury University certificate of graduation signed by President Matthew Simpson, dated 1843, a biography exerpt from the Early History of Greene County, Indiana (1875) about John Laverty, and an Indiana Asbury Philological ribbon, dated from circa 1843.

Biographical Note
John Laverty was born on April 26, 1822 to Samuel and Elizabeth Laverty in Parke County, Indiana. John attended Indiana Asbury, now DePauw University, and graduated as part of the class of 1843. He married Alice Spillman (born 1839-died 1918) on October 15, 1857 in Perry, Indiana. They had five children: Susan Eloise (Nutting), Adeline Amelia (Laverty), Erasmus C.A. (Laverty), Melissa J. (Laverty), and Elvira J. (Laverty). John was the first editor of the weekly newspaper Chronicle published in Mooresville, Morgan County, Indiana. He represented Morgan County in the Legislature during the 1851-1852 session, the first session under the new state constitution. In 1853, he entered the Methodist ministry and continued for 14 years. He died on August 12, 1890 and is buried at IOOF Cemetery in Indianola, Warren County, Iowa.
