Biographical Note
Rev. Josephine B. Huffer was born in Switzerland County, July 31, 1887, the daughter of Prior and Mary Elizabeth (Montgomery) Pavy. She graduated from the old Moores Hill College and taught school for several years. She turned to the ministry after the death of her husband Rev. Wilbur A. Campbell in 1918 after their 1914 marriage. In 1920, she was licensed as the first woman minister in Indiana and was assigned to the Cross Plains circuit. She was the first woman in the state to be ordained an elder and was ordained a minister on Sept. 13, 1925. She was assigned as the pastor of the old Main Street Church in Shelbyville, IN in 1924 and in 1927 a new church, now Trinity, was completed and dedicated. She had held the pastorate of the same church longer than any other minister in the state--30 years. She died Nov. 15, 1953.
