Biographical Sketch

Born near College Corner in Ohio, Rev. Harper was a member of a large family, of which he was the last to die. Left an orphan at an early age, he was reared by relatives in the Frankfort community. He was graduated from DePauw University in 1888, after working his way through college by waiting tables, carrying newspapers, and serving as church janitor. He had begun his ministry in 1887 in the church at Brookston and served in succession a number of pastorates in the Northwest Indiana Conference. Because he bore the middle name Lincoln, he came to be a great admirer of the former president and emancipator.
