Biographical Note
Mary Jane Farmer Hays was born on March 19, 1888, at Mt. Meridian, the daughter of Thomas B. and Alice (Hazelett) Farmer. She graduated from Greencastle High School where she later taught and was a member of the DePauw class of 1911. On June 11, 1931, she married Louis F. Hays, who preceded her in death on September 10, 1937.
Mrs. Hays was a member of the First Christian Church of which she was deaconess emeritus. She was also a member of the Washburn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Progress History Club, a charter member of DePauw Chapter Alpha Omicron Pi, Heritage Preservation Society, and the Putnam County Historical Society as well as the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She remained active in all of these groups until her death. On June 21, 1980, Jane passed away at the Putnam County Hospital. She is buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Greencastle, Indiana.
