Biographical Sketch
Gertrude Hendrix’s pre-college schooling was all in the Putnamville School in Putnam County, Indiana except for her senior year at Muncie Central High School. She earned her A.B. degree from DePauw University in 1926 where she was a Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to earn her masters in education and masters in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Her primary area of research was Nature of Unverbalized Awareness. She taught mathematics, mostly on the secondary level at Eastern Illinois University from 1930-1956. As a senior staff member of the University of Illinois Committee on School Mathematics (UICSM) from 1956 to 1966, Miss Hendrix was one of the principal formulators of the “new mathematics” developed by the UICSM project. Hendrix retired as associate professor emerita from the university to her Putnam County farm in 1966, where she raised horses, cattle and timber for several years.
