Biographical Sketch
Born in Salem, Indiana, Washington C. DePauw entered the working world at age 16 upon the death of his father. Some 25 years later, his investments in real estate and government bonds, along with ownership of such enterprises as woolen, flour and saw mills, iron-working plants, railways, and the American Plate Glass Works, yielded him an annual income said to be the largest in Indiana. Although his life was marred by much personal tragedy, Mr. DePauw was undaunted in his devotion to social causes, the church and education. Through his will he had planned to establish in a metropolitan setting a major university that would bear his name. However, the trustees of Indiana Asbury University, of which he also was a trustee and from which two of his sons graduated, persuaded him instead to commit certain funds (eventually totaling about $700,000), his energies, and his name to the institution in rural Greencastle. Arrangements were completed on January 17, 1884, Indiana Asbury University became DePauw University.
