Historical Sketch

Blaine Avenue UMC began as a class in 1858 in an old school house on Belmont Avenue. Other names were First Church and Williams Street. There were no mergers until it merged with Belmont Avenue in 1982. Belmont Avenue UMC apparently began in February 1911 as West Indianapolis mission at 2128 Barrett Avenue. By October 1911 it was West Indianapolis United Brethren Mission on a lot purchased that year at Belmont and Morgan. In May 1912 a concrete block structure was built on this lot. The need for more room led to the purchase of a lot at Belmont & Miller and a new building that was dedicated in 1918. It was remodeled and updated over the years. In 1982 Belmont and Blaine Avenue merged and became Belmont-Blaine United Methodist Church.

Mount Olive UMC was organized in 1870 and met in a small brick cottage on the southeast corner of National and High School Roads. It was founded as a rural church to serve the farming community. The first building was erected on the site of the present church and dedicated on Thanksgiving day in 1871. In 1898 it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. In 1911 it was destroyed by a cyclone and a modern building replaced it. In 1949 it was remodeled, but in 1952 fire again destroyed Mount Olive M.E. Church. In 1953 a fireproof education building was erected and in 1958 a new sanctuary was built. In 1990 Michigan Street UMC merged with Mount Olive UMC and in 1996 Belmont-Blaine UMC merged with Mount Olive UMC.
