Historical Sketch

Field Hockey first appeard at DePauw University in 1959, where it was a club sport. A club sport in this era operated with student officers and a faculty advisor, and functioned under the sponsorship of the Women's Recreation Association. Judy George arrived at DePauw in 1965, but played with the Dayton Association Field Hockey Team that year and did not coach/advise. She began coaching in 1966. The team was at its largest in 1968 with 32 players. In those early years DePauw played large schools such as Eastern Kentucky, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, Ball State and Indiana State so season records were sometimes not stunning. Winning teams occured in 1960, 1961, 1963 and 1968. The 1968 team became designated as a "team" by the physical education department, thus becoming the first varsity women's team in the modern history of sport at DePauw University.
