Biographical Sketch

Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes, president of DePauw University from 1903 to 1908, when he was elected to the episcopacy, died February 12 of virus pneumonia. Stricken at Muncie, Indiana, January 18 while on a speaking engagement, he had been in a Washington, D.C., hospital for two weeks. One of the outstanding speakers of the Methodist pulpit, Bishop Hughes was once listed as one of the ten greatest orators in America. He was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and was ordained in 1892. Before assuming the presidency of DePauw he served pastorates in Massachusetts.

During World War I he served as a chaplain. He had served as acting president of both Boston University and American University. From 1936 to 1940 he was head of the Methodist Board of Temperance and in 1941 was chairman of the church's war commission. He was at one time president of the Indiana State Teachers Association. Bishop Hughes was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and was a past national president of that organization.
