Biographical Sketch

Recognized as one of the country's outstanding educational leaders, he had been awarded honorary degrees by eight colleges and universities: Mt. Union College, Wabash College, University of Akron, Indiana, Valparaiso, Ohio Wesleyan and Willamette universities, and the Chicago Medical School. Under Dr. Humbert's vigorous leadership, DePauw had made tremendous progress during the eleven years of his presidency. The endowment had increased from $7 million to $11 million, faculty salaries had been doubled, and new buildings added - including the Roy O. West Library, the Art Center, Faculty Office Building, and Bishop Roberts Hall for men. Far from completion of his plans for the University's continued development, Dr. Humbert had planned further salary increases for the faculty, a new science building, a fine arts building and auditorium, new athletic facilities and another new residence hall. Born May 26, 1905, at Barberton, O., Dr. Humbert received his bachelor's degree from the College of Wooster (O.) In 1928. Four years later, he received the degree of bachelor of sacred theology from Boston University and earned a master's degree in the same field there in 1933.
