Biographical Sketch

John was born November 25, 1843, in Brookville, Ind., in which place his parents had resided since 1816. From early boyhood their son gave evidence that he possessed a deep religious instinct. He became a member of the Southeast Indiana Conference in 1867. He was ordained a deacon by Bishop Simpson in 1869 and elder by Bishop Scott in 1871. He became a teacher in the public schools when seventeen years of age. When twenty he was elected professor of mathematics in Brookville College, which he had attended as a student, and became the president of the institution in 1869. After some weeks of illness Doctor John passed to his reward on the seventh day of August, 1916.
