Scope and Contents

The collection consists of various letters to Rev. Nisbet; certificates; a "commonplace book" containing Sabbath School statistics, names of various class members, accounts, missionary money and names of donors, subjects, notes on sermons preached, and miscellaneous items and clippings. It also includes correspondence between DePauw University Archivist, Eleanore Cammack and Mabel Nisbet McLaughlin (his granddaughter who donated the records).

Biographical Note

Alfred B. Nisbet was born in Harrison County, Kentucky on Dec. 10, 1813. He was the son of James and Hannah (Journee) Nisbet. On Sept. 4, 1832 he married Elizabeth F. Endecott in Posey County, IN. They had three children: Elizabeth Wilmit (1843), Hannah Rebeca (1846), and Ann Louize (1849).

Alfred B. Nisbet was admitted to the Indiana Conference in 1841 and later went with the Southeast Indiana Conference when it was formed in 1852. In 1856 he transferred to the Southern Illinois Conference where he served for 23 years. He died in Aug. 1883 and was buried in Olney, IL. (Obituary, General Minutes, 1883, p. 317; member of IN and SE IN Conferences 1841-1856).
