Hisorical Sketch

Shortly after the early churches reached a size where districts were organized within the boundaries of the state of Indiana, camp meetings were an important part of the summer activities. Districts would rent or seek the donation of farm ground for these week long services.

By 1857, the German Methodist people around Santa Claus Church were developing a church owned campground. Camping, as we have known it for the past quarter century, began to grow as conference program because of the efforts of the Epworth League and men like S.L. Martin, R.O. Person, Craig Brandenburg and others.

Camping has never been a short term proposition for the present Conference or its several predecessor conferences. The program has been developing concern of men and women for well over 100 years. Camping has changed. They used to come for a week's vacation to a camp meeting in the summer; now the camps are year-round facilities.
