Collection Statement

The Frances Marie Mahaffie Nall scrapbook is contained in a black paper photograph album and covers the years 1919-1923. Contents include: Woman’s Self Government Association programs; personal notes and documents; signatures of friends; class and athletic schedules and university calendars; news clippings relating to a wide range of campus and athletic events; exhibition, recital, art, drama, music, university, athletic, and social programs; official basketball scorecard from the 1920 DePauw-Franklin game; Women’s Athletic Association Constitution and By-laws; student handbooks; sheet music; colorful Halloween and Valentine party napkins; other memorabilia. Loose items were placed at the bottom of the box. These include theater and musical performance programs, DePauw-Wabash football game scores over the years, and a script for a dance performance. A Hong Kong Christmas card and the programs for Miss Mahaffie's commencement and baccalaureate ceremonies were not part of the scrapbook, but are included with it.

Biographical Sketch

A member of the Class of 1923, Frances Marie Mahaffie Nall was involved in a wide range of campus activities and events as a student including the Women's Self Government Association. She participated in class backetball and track with the Women's Athletic Association. She was also a reporter for The DePauw newspaper, a member of the Ridpath History Club, Glee Club, Madras Committee, Sodalitas Latina, the May Day play and the cast of "Fanchon the Crickett." She and her husband, T. Otto Nall, managing editor of The Christian Advocate, traveled to fifteen European countries in the summer of 1947 to see the relief and reconstruction work of American churches (DePauw Alumnus, May 1948, p. 6). Mrs. Nall taught Western Civilization at the Methodist junior college, Evanston Collegiate Institute in 1948. The couple resided in Saint Paul, Minnesota as of 1962.
