Biographical Note
Francis John McConnell was born on a farm near Trinway, Ohio, in 1871, the son of a Methodist clergyman. He graduated from Ohio Weslyan University in 1894 and then became a student at Boston University School of Theology. McConnell served as a Bishop in New York and Pittsburgh and for years did religious work in India. He was a former president of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. Becoming president of DePauw University in 1909, he inaugurated and carried out a successful campaign to increase the endowment fund as well as broaden its education plan by increasing the curriculum. He died August 18, 1953 at his home near Lucasville, Ohio, on his eighty-second birthday.
