Men's Hall Association records
Collection Statement
The Men’s Hall Association Records document the establishment, growth and development of the organization from the adoption of its first constitution in 1923 to its last alumni newsletters in the 1980s. Included are the many versions of the constitution, minutes of the board meetings, membership, correspondence, committee minutes, handbooks, yearbooks, and the publications The Dells, an MHA newsletter, and The Hallman, an MHA alumni newsletter. The MHA scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings and photographs pertaining to events where MHA members are involved. There are three scrapbooks partially intact. These are filled mostly with signatures and pages that are decorated with formal and informal dance themes. The dates for the scrapbooks are scattered but concentrate around the school year 1950-1951. Photographs and some clippings date back to 1927. Loose photographs and clippings from a disassembled scrapbook have been arranged in a document case. The clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper. The records are arranged into two series: Series 1, General Records, is arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within each heading. Series 2, Scrapbooks, are contained in one flat box and one document case. Nine oversize copies of The Hallman are located in DePauw oversize collections; 16 bound record books have been assigned DPU volume numbers.

Historical Sketch
On April 1, 1923, Men's Hall Association was founded with the official adoption of their first constitution. The activities centered in Longden Hall. Unaffiliated men from Longden and Florence Halls were invited to join. MHA, while an organization of independent DePauw men, had many characteristics of a fraternity. It had a constitution and bylaws and participated fully in campus activities along side Greek-letter fraternities. After 1960, from pressure by some non-MHA independent men and the administration, all upper-class men living in the halls were automatically members of MHA. The "pledge program" was eliminated and the MHA pin became optional.
